Why I love older women
I love older women. There is just something about them that makes me happy and joyful about what the future holds.
Their faces seem to say ‘I have a secret and one day you will too!’. I have become completely addicted to my ‘Great style, older women’ board on Pinterest (check it out). In contrast to the national media, I can go there and feel swamped by glorious images of older women, dressing to the nines, and seemingly saying to the world, ‘I’m here, I’m beautiful, confident and ready to take on the world. ‘
Also check out www.Advanced.style where you will see Ari Seth Cohen’s wonderful photographs of older people wearing the most amazing clothes and sporting some great attitudes. (There is a lovely hardback book, I now have on my coffee table) I also like https://thatsnotmyage.com/ for great fashion and advice for older women.
Age UK report that in the UK there are 1.6 million people are aged 85 or over. There are over half a million people aged 90 and over in the UK. 70% of these are women. The most common images of older women focus on loneliness, isolation, bereavement, illness and dementia. But it doesn’t have to be this way, nor is this the whole picture.
For those of us in our 50s, our mothers broke all the rules in the 1960s and 70’s and they were never going to slide into the final decades of their lives quietly and demurely. I couldn’t be more happy about this. They will set the mould for growing old ‘disgracefully’ and as the generation to follow, we will try and keep up!
To me inner confidence of older women says:
- I don’t give a damn about what you think I should look like
- My years of wisdom shine through
- I am compassionate and kind to those who treat me well
- My confidence is borne out of my experience
- Life is harsh but look how far I’ve come
- I wear what I choose
- Mess with me at your peril!
Love, cherish and give a graceful bow to the older women in your life.
